If there's one thing to note about Vancouver theatre, it's that this city absolutely treasures it. In fact, when arts funding began to get slashed, local bloggers and theatre-goers rallied to support the city's theatres. We boast venues in every size and form, from small-time indie stages to internationally recognized playhouses.
For classical masterpieces, head to downtown's Queen Elizabeth Theatre, home of the Vancouver Opera and Ballet British Columbia. In the same building, the Vancouver Playhouse is a one-stop shop for unforgettable shows with mainstream appeal.
Meanwhile, Firehall Arts Centre, named because of its one-time use as a firehouse, supports Canadian artists and more experimental works. The beloved Arts Club Theatre Company on Granville Island is an impassioned nonprofit showing an eclectic blend of new works and classics. For more off-kilter productions, consider the Cultch, a one-time church in gritty East Vancouver now run by an active theatre community.
Several major festivals punctate the Vancouver theatre scene. Summers are marked by
Bard on the Beach, an outdoor Shakespeare festival staged in elegant tents on the waterfront. Vancouverites also take advantage of the nice weather with
Theatre under the Stars, a series of popular musicals performed in beautiful Stanley Park. Autumn, meanwhile, brings the popular
Fringe Festival, featuring unconventional performances by aspiring Thespians on Granville Island.
