Home-grown performers, a wealth of concert venues and a surprisingly diverse array of annual festivals mean Vancouver has one of Canada's most vibrant live music scenes.
Among the city's leading venues for pop and rock is the Commodore Ballroom, ranked one of the top-10-most-influential clubs in North America by Billboard Magazine. If jazz is more your taste, consider O'Doul's, an intimate live venue downtown, or the Cellar, a basement jazz club in trendy Kitsilano. More into arena anthems? Rogers Arena and BC Place, the two substantial stadiums in downtown Vancouver, host concerts for large-scale, international musical stars from Lady Gaga to U2.
Meanwhile, classical enthusiasts can take in performances by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra at the vintage 1927 Orpheum Theatre or see the latest works of the Vancouver Opera during its May-October season at the ultra-modern, 2,700-seat Queen Elizabeth Theatre.
The city also boasts some serious local talent. Sarah McLachlan, the inimitable Michael Buble and Bif Naked all call Vancouver home. Jazz singer and pianist Diana Krall hails from just across the water on Vancouver Island. And a thriving indie scene means neighbourhood bars and clubs are filled with the next big thing seven nights a week.
For music fans, the highlight of the year is Vancouver's summer festival season. The
Vancouver International Jazz Festival brings in big-name international acts for 10 straight days of free and paid live performances around the city. Folk lovers get their fill at the weekend-long
Folk Music Festival, staged in an idyllic setting along the ocean at Jericho Beach. Finally,
MusicFest Vancouver offers up two weeks of live world and classical performances.
