Performing Arts

When it's rainy outdoors, Vancouverites head indoors to one of Canada's most vibrant performing arts scenes.  Nearly every night of the week, the city boasts great theatre and live music, as well as progressive dance performances.

Classical enthusiasts will find arguably Western Canada's finest symphony, opera company and ballet in Vancouver.  Theatre lovers have an embarrassment of options: from gritty, progressive works staged in alternative venues on the East Side to Broadway-style blockbusters in downtown's Vancouver Playhouse.  And music fans will find a thriving indie scene, with homegrown talent filling bars, clubs and other intimate venues.

Things heat up at festival time.  Summer is marked by outdoor Shakespeare, two weeks of live international jazz and a progressive dance festival celebrating edgy local artists.  The rest of the year brings experimental theatre, contemporary dance showcases and a full plate of folk and world music fests.  Check out the options below.
